Medical Spa @ National Cancer Institute

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Dr. Pornthipa Phicha, Assistant Director, National Cancer Institute of Thailand, officially opened the National Cancer Institute’s Medical Spa on 9th September 2009.  The spa is located on the 6th floor of Domrongniradoun Building, Rama VI, Bangkok.  Set up with the assistance of Horwath HTL Spa Consulting, the spa offers a limited therapy menu focusing on provision of T.L.C. for patients, rather than on any therapeutic value that the therapies may offer.  All therapies are offered free of charge to patients, with the services provided by a team of volunteer spa professionals, under the STRICT supervision of the institutes medical staff.  It is the institutes own team of medical professionals that confirm which therapy (if any) that each patient may experience.  Of the approximate 40 patients who avail of the spas services each Wednesday, Facial Therapy has been the most popular in the first few weeks of operation.  As the number of volunteer professionals grows, so too will the hours of service, with the eventual goal being to offer services five days per week.

For more information or for professional spa therapists who wish to volunteer, please contact Khun Thida, Spa Manager, National Cancer Institute of Thailand Tel: 0 2354 7030-35 ext. 2606

Thai Eco-Labels

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Thailand possesses a relatively comprehensive green  labelling system. With the exception of food, beverages and pharmaceuticals, three organisations - the Thailand

Environment Institute (TEI), Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI), and Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation (TGO) - are the primary players involved in the development of standards, testing and promotion of eco-labels.

Three eco-labels are currently in use: Green Label, Carbon Label and CoolMode. The fourth and newest label, the Carbon Footprint, will be launched towards the end of 2009. Businesses can avail themselves of these eco-labels to suit their needs.

Sin: The Hidden Trade-Off
Example: Paper made from renewable resources may use harmful bleach, require a lot of water, or generate greenhouse emissions.
Solution: Understand the environmental impact of your product life-cycle.

Sin: No Proof
Example: Unverifiable claims of: no animal testing, energy efficient light blubs, tissue from post-consumer recycled content.
Solution: Provide evidence to back claims.

Sin: Vagueness
Example: Vague claim like ‘environmentally friendly’ or unexplained symbols that do not clarify whether the product can be recycled or is made of recycled products, or the ratio of recycled material used.
Solution: Provide precise explanations.

Sin: Irrelevance
Example: Dose not pertain to the product, or ingredients are illegal or carcinogenic such as ‘non-CFC’, asbestos-free.
Solution: If all competitors operate under the same ban, such claims are unwarranted.

Sin: Lesser of Two Evils
Example: Organic tobacco’ kills just as surely as non-organic tobacco.
Solution:  Pointless to imbue something harmful or unnecessary as virtuous.

Sin: Fibbing
Example: Making false claims about materials used or certifications obtained.
Solution: Be truthful.

Sin: Worshipping False Labels
Example: Fake eco-labels or certifications, or house brand labels/endorsements.
Solution: Get genuine third-party certification.
